The Peoples Flea has become a very popular IG Live ever since the Virtual Flea has started to do sets on Popshop Live. Hosted by @PirateKingev, the live usually brings about a different mix of items than the classic IG lives you may know of. Various sellers bring on Anime tees, Cartoon tees, and various things other than band tees. Last week, @hawks.vtg and @fnhvintage put together a Kanye West themed IG live where, as the name suggests, they only sold vintage Kanye West tees. The live was an incredible success as they sold over $17,000 worth of tees in less than one hour. We spoke with Max to hear about his experience. Oh, did we forget to mention that Max is only 17 years old?!?

Who are you?

“My name is Max, AKA hawks.vtg. I started buying and selling vintage around 6-8 months ago, and I just turned 17″.

How did you get into vintage?

“I got into the game in August of 2021 but didn’t have a vintage account. I did have a Poshmark account that I used to try and flip thrift store finds. I got started posting a Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated shirt from the movie in 98, and I found it for 2 dollars. When I posted it, I immediately got an offer for $200 from someone overseas. I’ve been reselling my whole life, I was selling supreme and sneakers in middle school, I was flipping BAPE masks when quarantine first started., but after the Scooby Doo shirt it kind of blossomed from there”.

What was the vision/purpose of the Kanye live?

“I sourced over 30 pieces for the live. I had found a guy, let’s call him Mike, and we ended up talking and he said he had a bunch of these Kanye shirts in a box, that were samples from the manufacturer. He sent me pictures and I was shocked because it was a lot of awesome vintage Kanye shirts, all from the Late Registration/College Dropout era.

I bought the first shirt about two weeks after the Kanye documentary premiered. The guy knew what they were worth, but I wanted to get these shirts out to the public, so I bought them all. I reached out to a friend, Frank, @fnhvintage, to do a partner set and the rest is history. I wanted to do it all on the live to keep the market stable and not tank the value”.

How did it go?

“We ended up doing 17k in one hour. Before the live, I had just finished my workout. I was yelling. My mom was yelling. It was one of the craziest moments in my life. All the hard work paid off and it was just an amazing experience”.

What were some notable pieces from the live?

“We ran 3 big grails. One Louis Vuitton Kanye tee, one Miracle Whip tee and one Godfather College Dropout sample on a 98 Gildan tag. The Miracle Whip went for $1,000, The LV tee went for $2,100 and the Godfather College Dropout went for $2,500”.

Any other crazy things happen during the live?

“Hypebeast Style was in the live and that was definitely a highlight for me. To see such a popular page that I follow and admire show appreciation during my set was a crazy feeling”!

What are some future goals for you and your page?

“I love themed lives; I’m not digging in the trenches, but I dig online and curate. For part 2, I’ve planned to do a Marvel themed live. I hit a haul for over 20 pieces and I’m in the works of getting that all together.

Themed lives allow for things to be truly unique, and I enjoy bringing stuff that wasn’t the same old things that people have already seen!

At the end of the day, Vintage is forever, and I want my kids to see the stuff that I’ve bought and sold. No matter where you’re from or how old you are, that nostalgia for vintage will always be there. Kanye’s music will last forever and it’s the same with vintage. I don’t know if I’ll be a reseller of vintage forever, but I’ll always be a part of the community. I’ll be reselling my whole life, no matter what. I’ve been doing it since I was 11″.
