Concepts Dives Into Vintage Tees For Air Max Day

The Thread

Concepts is a well known name within the Sneaker + Streetwear realm, right next to Kith and Bodega. For Air Max Day, Concepts released a triple pack of Nike Air Max 1s that all represent a very unique point in history around the 1960s-1970s. In prep for the final release of the trio, Concepts contacted Boston based Vintage seller, Disorder Vintage, who is also a part of the FADED Event, to curate tees for a vintage drop that would happen alongside the sneakers. The Concepts x Nike Air Max 1 “Far Out” had a very psychedelic theme, drawing similarities to events like Woodstock. We spoke with Ryan aka Disorder Vintage to hear more about how this all came to be.

So, how did this all happen?

“They found my page and slid into the DMs. I did the zoom call and they talked about a shoe for Air Max day that they were releasing and they were interested in curating vintage with their sneakers and capsule collection. They basically were saying its like Woodstock without saying Woodstock, so I was able to curate a bunch of psychedelic shit”.

How many tees did you need to curate for the installment?

“I needed 36 tees for all three concepts locations. They actually rejected a few pieces that I submitted”.

Like what?

“They rejected the LSD mosquitohead, but that was a blessing in disguise because no-one would sell me one for a fair price. I went back and forth with the Concepts team for months and it finally came out last weekend. The Tees dropped with the last shoe of the pack that came out last Saturday”.

How long will your tees be there?

“My tees will be in there for the next month”.

What was the hardest part?

“I had to make SKUs and sign an NDA which was the hardest part, not being able to talk about it. I was buying off local homies who were surprised that I was buying 80s rock tees and Grateful Dead stuff”.

Did you find out how they found your page and why they picked you?

They said it was completely random. They found my page and noticed we had a few mutual followers. I’m not sure what their plan is for it, but just seeing the installation with the tees and the sneakers completely brings the concept together, no pun intended. This is throwing higher levels of premium vintage in a premium shop for people who pay premium prices, and they wouldn’t usually be looking for vintage.

I’m happy that they picked me and I feel like I’m the right person for this job. I got lucky, I got a cool opportunity and I ran with it”.

Have you sold anything?
“I put out 13 items on the website and theres only 6 or 7 pieces left. I’ll get updates about in store items this week”.

Anything crazy to think about all this?

“What was interesting was that they only asked for t-shirts. Its also crazy to believe that Nike was somewhat involved for this”.

What was your favorite thing about this collaboration?

“I loved that when I was curating, I was like curating for an acid trip. The best part was curating and being able to step outside of my comfort zone. Its not like I don’t love these tees, but It was definitely outside of my comfort zone”!

Special thanks to Ryan for talking with us. Make sure you check him out on IG and check out the FADED Event that we are partnering with! If you’re anywhere on the east coast, you do not want to miss this once in a lifetime event!
