Netflix Highlights Vintage in New “Swap Shop” Show

The Thread

Swap Shop is a new Netflix show that follows pickers/resellers around Tennessee in search of the best and most valuable vintage items to flip. The show features various pickers from different niches, but what stands out to us is the addition of the Versus ATL team, specifically highlighting the vintage market and community. We had the opportunity to speak with Danny Perez, the co-owner of Versus ATL.

Funnily enough, Danny thought the show was fake at first but then he got word from a friend at Frenchfried vintage. She actually recommended Versus ATL because they wanted more diversity on the show. Then, Netflix producers reached out; they did a few interviews to get a feel for the team. They believed in the team and saw our store and Instagram and they thought it was cool. “We signed some paperwork and made it happen”.

Is it crazy that Netflix is interested in vintage?
“Not really- this market is getting bigger every day. There is only going to be more shows about this stuff, and it didn’t surprise me. But I did think the swap shop angle was super interesting. It’s a historic radio show and it was cool to be a part of it”.

So, the producers wanted you on season 2?
“So, we signed a deal for a one season deal. But it ended up being 2 seasons from the 12 episodes we signed on for”.

Was it weird to act out a lot of this stuff?
“It was super weird in the beginning. Like the producers would say- “yo say something to your partner to nag him” And in the beginning it was a little strange. But I told the producer I didn’t want this shit to be scripted. And honestly, aside from some input from the production it wasn’t that bad at all. Most of everything we shot was completely authentic and there was a ton of real finds that didn’t make final cut”.

Like what?
“We went to this old guy’s barn and we found so much stuff. Some crazy Mark Gonzalez Tech Deck was super cool, we thought it was sick as shit. And it sucked that some of the vintage stuff we found wasn’t shown. But everything was legit, everything we bought we bought out of our own money and everything we sold we actually profited off of”.

What has happened after swap shop?
“We got a ton of publicity from the show. One of the episodes in particular we were at my dad’s restaurant. And it was cool to have the show highlight my dad’s restaurant- Monterey Mexican Restaurant in Knoxville TN. Also, we’ve noticed a lot of collectors outside of clothes and sneakers coming to the shop. Tons of toy collectors especially”.

What do you think about people that think this is bad for the culture?
“I’ve been doing this for long enough, for people that think this is bad is just lame. If you don’t do it, and do it right, someone else is going to come along (not from the community) and they will do it wrong. So man, if I wasn’t going to do it , then someone else was. At the end of the day, I want this market to get bigger. Yes, it will become harder but that’s life. Not everything is going to stay a secret”.

Finishing thoughts?

We have a new shop that is amazing, we designed it and curated it very well. And this is a next level shop for us. We would love all you guys to come check it out.
